50 shades of character

So for book club this month we are reading 50 Shades of Grey. And what strikes me about it (no pun intended!) – from the point of view of a writer interested in where stories come from and what we can learn from reading – is how clearly derivative both the main characters are.

Anastasia Steele is Bella Swan from Twilight. And Christian Grey, I am sure, is a non-murderous American Psycho. Who played Patrick in American Psycho? Christian Bale. I rest my case.

So here’s prompt for writing. Choose two characters you know well from your own reading. Rename them. Re-imagine them as little or as much as you wish. In 50 Shades of Grey the MCs meet when Ana goes to interview Christian for a friend. Write a scene where one of your derived characters interviews the other. See what happens.
