Something for the weekend #5

Another great photograph from Jon Hill. I can’t get the image to show up big on wordpress, but if you click on it you can really see the detail. Wonderful.

I love the lines on this sculpture and the debris lying around her. It looks like she has just emerged.

It also puts me in mind of Stephen King’s book On Writing. He describes stories as fossils waiting to be dug out of the ground. This figure has been cut out of the trunk of a tree and you have to wonder if she wasn’t always in there, just waiting to be found. With a story or novel, you have an idea in your head but the act of making it a reality on the page can be a challenge. The writer chips away, forms, reforms, defines and refines.

If you have a story hiding in your mind somewhere, perhaps this is the day to start carving it out.

  1. I have two stories, but the opening lines remain out of reach. I might have to start at the second paragraph. Mr. King’s book is one of my writer’s bibles. I like his view, write what you want to write, and the heck with the rest of the world.
